Market comments — Decatur Livestock Market

Stocker Heifers, 149 Stocker Bulls/Steers, 29 Feeder Heifers, 29 Feeder Bulls/Steers. Things were pretty grim as cattle producers face yet another week of downfall in the cattle market. With the continuing yo-yo effect of the stock market, the cattle futures are having a hard time finding any ground. As a result, our market was $10-$20/cwt lower on all classes of calves/yearlings. We did notice that there is still a demand for bred cows and pairs although we didn’t have very many to choose from. Packer cows and bulls were $15- $20/cwt lower. Sure will be nice when we have something more positive to report for the market! AS A REMINDER, DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS, WE ONLY ALLOW ACTIVE BUYERS IN THE AUDITORIUM. Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
