Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week flyweight steers sold sharply higher. Steer calves over 450 lbs sold 5.00 to 7.00 higher. Heifer calves sold 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Large crowd of order buyers were on the seats with most staying to the end of the sale filling loads. Bulk of the calves were right off the cow, clean eyed, long eared and open haired. Most calves had pre-condition shots with a few weaned calves in the mix. Calves continue to come to town several pounds lighter than last year. On this sale last year, 16% of the calves weighed over 600 lbs. Only 10% of the similar consignment sheet weighed over 600 lbs on Friday. With the dry summer and possible shortness of winter feed, most producers did not keep any replacement heifers from there longtime genetic base in there cow herds. Over 2300 head of slaughter, feeding cows, preg checked open heifers and bulls have made there way to town in the last two weeks because of the short feed supply. Next Thursday, weigh-up cows and bulls. Friday, Nov 13, Tri-State Bred Heifer and Cow sale with several complete dispersion's on the books.
