Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 5 Colorado auction markets included: Centennial Livestock, Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, Sterling Livestock, and Livestock Exchange. Trade activity and demand Light to Good. Feeder steers under 450 lbs sold 6.00 higher to sharply higher, 450-600 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, and over 600 lbs 11.00 to 18.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs sold uneven, 500-600 lbs unevenly steady, and over 600 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Feeder dairy heifers over 850 lbs sold unevenly steady. Average dressing slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 higher; average dressing bulls sold steady. The next available report will be Monday, October 21, 2024.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
