Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 3 Colorado auction markets included: Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, and Livestock Exchange. Trade activity and demand was moderate to good. Feeder steers under 400 lbs sold steady to 10.00 lower on a light test, 400-500 lbs 9.00 higher, 500-600 lbs 2.00 lower to sharply lower, and over 600 lbs steady to 3.00 higher with instances of 7.00 to 14.00 lower on 700-800 lb steers. Feeder heifers across all weight classes sold mostly steady to 6.00 higher with instances of 12.00 to 13.00 higher. Feeder dairy heifers over 850 lbs sold 4.00 to 10.00 higher. Average dressing slaughter cows sold mostly 1.00 lower; average dressing slaughter bulls sold 19.00 higher. The next available report will be Monday, March 25, 2024.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
