Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 3 Colorado auction markets included: Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, and Livestock Exchange. Trade activity and demand were moderate to good. Feeder steers too thinly traded on calves weighing under 800 lbs for an accurate trend, but lower undertones noted. Steers over 800 lbs lightly tested trading steady to 3.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 750 lbs too thinly traded for an accurate trend, but lower undertones noted. Heifers over 750 lightly tested trading steady to 3.00 higher. Dairy heifers too thinly traded this week for an accurate trend. Average dressing slaughter cows sold 1.00 to 4.00 lower while the bulls sold 3.00 higher. The next available report will be Monday, April, 25, 2022.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
