Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 3 Colorado auction markets included: Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, and Livestock Exchange. Trade activity and demand moderate to good. Feeder steers under 450 lbs sold uneven on a light test, 450-650 lbs mostly 2.00 to 5.00 higher with instances of sharply higher, and over 650 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 higher. Trade mixed on feeder heifers under 500 lbs. Feeder heifers 500-700 lbs sold 4.00 to 6.00 higher, and over 700 lbs trade was mixed on a light test. Dairy feeder heifers 950-1200 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower, and 1200-1300 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher on a light test. Average dressing slaughter cows and bulls sold mostly steady. The next available report will be Monday, April 11, 2022.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
