Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 4 Colorado auction markets included: Centennial Livestock, Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, and Livestock Exchange. Trade activity and demand moderate to good. Feeder steers under 550 lbs sold unevenly steady with the exception of 450-500 lbs steers which sold 10.00 higher. Steers 550-650 lbs sold 9.00 to 11.00 higher. Steers over 650 lbs sold mostly 1.00 to 5.00 lower on a light test. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs sold mostly 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Heifers weighing 600-750 lbs sold 6.00 to 10.00 lower. Heifers weighing over 750 lbs sold mostly 3.00 lower. Feeder dairy heifers over 800 lbs sold unevenly steady. Average dressing slaughter cows and bulls sold 1.00 to 3.00 lower. The next available report will be Monday, March 21, 2022.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
