Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 4 Colorado auction markets included: Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, Sterling Livestock, and Livestock Exchange. Feeder cattle numbers marketed this week down by 39%. Most of the markets were focused on hosting their bred cow and cow/calf pair specials with over 4700 offerings. Feeder steers under 650 lbs sold 9.00 lower to sharply lower, 650-800 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower, and over 800 lbs 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs mostly 1.00 to 2.00 higher, 500-650 lbs5.00 to 9.00 lower, and over 650 lbs steady to 6.00 higher. Young to middle aged bred cows too thinly tested from last week, but prices firm with premiums seen as high as 2500.00 on fancy cows. Average dressing slaughter cows and bulls sold mostly 2.00 to 5.00 higher. The next available report will be Monday, December 27, 2021.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
