Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Trade activity and demand moderate to good? Feeder steers under 600 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher with instances of 6.00 to 7.00 higher, steers 600-700 lbs 1.00 to 6.00 lower, and over 700 lbs sold uneven. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher with instances of 6.00 higher, heifers 600-700 lbs sold 1.00 lower, and over 700 lbs sold mostly 5.00 to 7.00 higher with few instances of steady to 4.00 higher. Average dressing slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to 1.00 lower. Several offerings of breds were sold this week with heifers selling for 1400.oo to 1585.00 per head and Young to Middle Aged cows selling for 1200.00 to 1500.00 per head. Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
