Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 5 Colorado auction markets included: Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, Sterling Livestock, Centennial Livestock and Livestock Exchange. Trade activity and demand were moderate to good. Feeder steers under 500 lbs sold 1.00 to 6.00 higher, 500 - 700 lbs sold steady to 2.00 lower, and over 700 lbs sold mostly 2.00 to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 400 lbs sold 8.00 higher, 400 - 650 lbs sold mostly steady, and over 650 lbs sold 1.00 to 7.00 lower. Average dressing slaughter cows sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower and average dressing slaughter bulls sold 1.00 higher. The next available report will be Monday, November 08, 2021.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
