Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 5 Colorado auction markets included: Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, Sterling Livestock, Centennial Livestock, and Livestock Exchange. Trade activity and demand moderate to very good. Feeder steers under 400 lbs sold sharply higher on a light test, 400-800 lbs mostly steady to 5.00 higher with instances of 7.00 higher, and over 800 lbs sold uneven. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs sold uneven, 500-700 lbs steady to 4.00 higher, 700-800 lbs 8.00 to 9.00 higher and over 800 lbs unevenly steady. Average dressing slaughter cows and bull sold 1.00 to 3.00 lower. The next available report will be Monday, October 25, 2021.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
