Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 4 Colorado auction markets included: Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, Sterling Livestock, and Livestock Exchange. Trade activity and demand moderate to good. Feeder steers across all weight classes traded mostly 4.00 to 8.00 lower with instances of sharply lower on 450-550 lb steers. Feeder heifers under 450 lbs traded 1.00 to 2.00 higher, 450-550 lbs 2.00 to 6.00 lower, 550-650 lbs 4.00 to 7.00 higher, and over 650 lbs 6.00 to 8.00 lower on a light test. In the slaughter cow and bull supply, average dressing Breakers traded 3.00 lower, and average dressing Boners, Leans, and Bulls were 6.00 to 8.00 lower. Stock cows returning to feed traded 9.00 to 11.00 lower. The next available report will be Monday, March 8, 2021.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
