Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 5 Colorado auction markets included: Centennial Livestock Auction (Stock Show Special), Winter Livestock Auction, La Junta Livestock, Livestock Exchange ( bred cow special and Stock Show Special), Sterling Livestock (Stock Show Special). Trade activity and demand moderate to good. Feeder steers under 300 lbs traded 1.00 higher, 300-850 lbs 1.00 to 5.00 lower with instances of sharply lower on 500-550 lb steers, and over 850 lbs steady to 1.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs traded steady to 6.00 higher, and over 500 lbs steady to 6.00 lower. In the slaughter cow and bull supply, average dressing Breakers traded 3.00 higher, average dressing Boners 1.00 lower, average dressing Leans 1.00 higher, and average dressing Bulls 3.00 lower. Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
