Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Combined weighted average report for 5 Colorado auction markets included: Livestock Exchange, Winter Livestock, La Junta Livestock, Sterling Livestock, and Centennial Livestock. Trade activity and demand moderate to good. Coming into the fall run, premiums are being seen mostly on calves with at least two rounds of vaccinations and 30+ days weaned. The effects of long term extreme drought in Colorado are seen in the condition and weights of the cattle offerings. Recent colder weather has spurred market activity the past couple weeks and receipt volumes running through the barns are picking up. Feeder steers under 400 lbs traded 8.00 higher to sharply higher, 400-750 lbs mostly steady to 6.00 higher with instances of 11.00 higher, and steers over 750 lbs too thinly tested to trend. Feeder heifers under 400 lbs 6.00 lower to sharply lower on a light test, 400-700 lbs 1.00 to 6.00 higher and over 700 lbs steady to 7.00 higher on a light test. In the slaughter cows and bulls supply, average dressing Breakers traded 2.00 higher, average dressing Boners steady, average dressing Leans 1.00 lower and average dressing Bulls 1.00 lower. Middle Aged cows returning to feed made up the bulk of stock cow offerings, trading mostly steady. Offerings of short bred cows and pairs rising due to pasture conditions. Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?
