Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last sale; Steer calves 300-350 lbs sold lower and 400-550 lbs were steady to 20.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-750 lbs sold steady to 8.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-550 lbs sold higher with 550-600 lbs being lower. No comparable sales or numbers of feeder heifers but a higher trend was felt throughout. Slaughter cows sold 2.00-7.00 higher and slaughter bulls were steady. Excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
