Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 400-500 lbs sold 10.00 lower and 550-600 lbs were 8.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold lower while 650-850 lbs were steady-8.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-450 lbs and 500-600 lbs sold 2.00-8.00 higher and 450-500 lbs were lower. Feeder heifers 600-700 lbs sold lower with 750-800 lbs being higher. Trade was uneven on smaller numbers with a moderate market on good demand. Slaughter cows sold steady to 4.00 lower and slaughter bulls were 7.00 higher. Excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
