Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves sold 5.00-15.00 higher instances sharply higher and steer yearlings were 7.00-14.00 higher. Heifer calves 400-450 lbs sold 6.00 lower while 450-600 lbs being higher. Feeder heifers sold steady -10.00 higher. Trade was active on similar numbers with moderate demand. Slaughter cows were 2.00-4.00 higher and slaughter bulls sold 3.00 lower. Excellent buyer attendance. February 25-26, 2026 will be a 2 day sale with calves and yearlings selling on the 25th and grown cattle on the 26th.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
