Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 300-350 lbs and 500-550 lbs sold 2.00-10.00 higher and 400-450 lbs as well as 550-600 lbs were 2.00-6.00 lower. Steer yearlings 600-700 lbs sold 8.00-12.00 higher and 700-800 lbs were 6.00-8.00 lower. Heifer calves 400-550 lbs sold 2.00-5.00 higher while 300-350 lbs and 550-650 lbs were 6.00 lower. Feeder heifer yearlings 650-800 lbs sold steady to 9.00 higher. Trade was slow with light demand on smaller numbers. Slaughter cows sold 5.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 6.00-8.00 higher. Excellent buyer attendance. Next sale will be January 8-9,2025

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
