Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves under 600 lbs sold 4.00-8.00 lower with the exception of 300-350 lbs & 500-550 lbs being steady and 350-400 lbs were 5.00 higher. Steer yearlings sold 2.00-7.00 lower with exception of 650-700 lbs being 5.00 higher. Heifer calves were 6.00-7.00 lower except for 450-500 lbs at 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers sold 6.00-10.00 lower. Trade and demand were moderately slow on smaller numbers. Special attention was paid to weaning dates and vaccinations given. Slaughter cows sold steady to 8.00 lower and slaughter bulls were 10.00-12.00 lower. Market was moderate with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
