Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 400-450 lbs sold sharply higher and 450-500 lbs were 3.00 lower while 500-600 lbs sold 3.00-19.00 lower. Steer Yearlings 750-850 lbs were 2.00-3.00 lower. Heifer calves 400-450 lbs sold sharply higher and 450-500 lbs were 3.00 higher while 500-550 lbs sold 2.00 lower and 550-600 lbs were 13.00 higher. Yearling heifers 600-650 lbs sold 16.00 higher and 650-700 lbs were sharply lower while 800-850 lbs sold sharply higher. Trade was uneven on smaller numbers with good demand. Slaughter bulls sold 1.00-5.00 lower with instances 5.00 higher and slaughter cows sold steady to 1.00 lower with instances 4.00 higher. Market was moderate with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
