Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 450-500 lbs sold sharply lower and 550-600 lbs were 14.00 lower. Feeder steers 650-700 lbs were 16.00 higher while 750-800 lbs sold 3.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-400 lbs were 2.00-8.00 higher and 400-450 lbs sold sharply lower while 450-500 were 1.00 higher and 500-550 lbs sold 2.00 lower with 550-600 lbs being steady. Feeder heifers 650-700 lbs sold 2.00 higher. Trade was uneven on larger numbers with moderate demand. No report last week on cows and bulls to compare with. Comparing to two (2) weeks ago; Slaughter cows were 4.00-7.00 lower instances 10.00 lower and slaughter bulls sold 4.00-7.00 lower instances 1.00 higher. Market was moderate with excellent buyer participation.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
