Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 350-450 lbs were 12.00-13.00 higher and 450-500 lbs sold 7.00 higher. Steers 500-550 lbs were 4.00 lower while 550-600 lbs sold 10.00 higher. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs were steady and 450- 500 lbs sold 8.00 higher. Heifers 500=600 lbs sold 5.00-16.00 lower. Trade was moderate to active and demand was moderate to good. Slaughter cows were steady to 2.00 higher while slaughter bulls sold 2.00-3.00 lower. Smaller numbers on a strong market with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
