Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; steer calves 350-400 lbs sold steady on a light test; 400-550 lbs sold 3.00-6.00 lower, while 550-600 lbs were 2.00-3.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs sold 4.00-10.00 lower; 700-750 lbs traded 1.00 higher; 750-800 lbs 7.00 higher. Heifer calves 400-550 lbs sold 6.00-9.00 lower, while 550-600 lbs were 16.00 higher on a thin test. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 6.00 higher; 650-700 lbs 11.00 lower. Trade moderate to active, demand moderate to good on larger numbers. Slaughter cows were steady to 2.00 lower and slaughter bulls sold steady to 10.00 higher. Excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
