Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves sold 10.00-20.00 higher, except 300-350 lbs and 500-550 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs had no comparison due to light offerings last week. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs 2.00 higher; 400-600 lbs 7.00-8.00 higher, except 500-550 lbs steady to 1.00 higher. Feeder steers 5.00-6.00 higher. Feeder heifers were 2.00-4.00 higher on comparable sales. Trade active, demand good. Slaughter cows traded steady to firm. Slaughter bulls were steady to 2.00 higher, instances 5.00 higher. In the receipts were Thursday's replacement cow special sale that included near 700 head.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
