Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, supply was up this week with a break in the weather. Demand was strong, and attendance was good. It was a mix offering of thin flesh and fleshier calves selling uneven. On a light test due to supply last week feeder steers 300lb-500lb sold $12.00-$13.00 lower, while steers 500lb-700lb sold $4.00-$5.00 higher, while heifers 300lb-500lb sold $7.00-$8.00 higher, and 500lb-700lb heifers sold $17.00-$18.00 higher. The largest draft was a group of 24 762lb heifers selling for $256.00 $/Cwt. Slaughter cattle sold $8.00-$9.00 higher on a light test

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
