Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to the special feeder cattle auction 2 weeks ago, light weight steer calves sold steady with a lower undertone, 600 -700 lb calves were steady to 3.00 higher and heavier weight yearling cattle were fully steady. Today's heifer trade saw 500 lb calves as much as 20.00 higher with 600 -700 lb 15.00 lower and no test on the yearling cattle. High quality ran very deep in today's consignments of home-raised fall calves both in smaller packages and load lots. Available were calves both "just off the cow" and LTW'd but all double vaccinated. Demand was very good for today's large supply. Internet bidding active. The next scheduled feeder calf special is May 7.
