Market comments — USDA reporter

Comparing to last weeks sale, steer calves 300-400 lbs were 27.00-33.00 lower and 400-500 lbs sold 15.00-17.00 lower while 500-550 lbs were 24.00 lower. Feeder steers had insufficient numbers to compare. Heifer calves 350-450 lbs sold 10.00-14.00 lower and 450-500 lbs were 5.00 lower, 550-600 lbs sold sharply lower. Feeder heifers had no comparable bunches last week. Trade was moderate on larger numbers with good demand. Slaughter cows sold 2.00-4.00 lower while slaughter bulls sold 4.00 lower. Uneven market with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
