Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week, 400-500 lb steer calves on a light test sold with a higher undertone, with 500-550 lbs steer calves trading 5.00-10.00 higher, 550-650 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone on a light test with last week with 650-700 lbs sharply higher on a couple of offerings of good quality steers with good weighing conditions, 700-750 lb steers sold 8.00-13.00 higher, 750-800 lbs not well tested but sold with a higher undertone and over 800 lbs sold firm to 12.00 higher with the most advance on a part load of 815 lb steers. Heifer calves weighing 450-550 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone on limited offerings and 600-650 lbs sold 8.00-14.00 higher on comparable sales with over 650 lbs selling with a higher undertone. Demand was good on a moderate offering with overall quality very good on the bigger bunches of yearlings. Last Friday's sharp gains in the CME Feeder contracts and Friday's WASDE report showing corn yields increasing 2.7 bpa at 181.2 bpa average yield had corn down 20-21 cents to end the week helping to give support to the market. Several stick out sales included 59 steers weighing 686 lbs at 412.00, 73 steers weighing 766 lbs at 363.25, 47 steers weighing 815 lbs at 355.00, 58 hd and 120 hd steers weighing 883 and 893 lbs at 335.00-336.75. Feeder heifers included 43 heifers weighing 627 lbs at 389.25 and 47 heifers weighing 719 lbs at 362.25. Slaughter cows sold steady to 5.00 lower with the most decline on the average and low dressing cows.

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.
