Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week, a much lighter offering this week with steer calves under 550 lbs lightly tested, 550-600 lbs steers sold 2.00-5.00 higher, with 600-700 lbs on a lighter offering trading with a firm to higher undertone, pot load of 852 lb steers sold 5.00 higher than last week's pot of same weight and similar quality the other two pot loads of 800-and 832 lbs were not tested with last week. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady to firm on a light comparison with all other weights lightly tested. Demand was good on a light supply with a couple of stick out sales included 51 steers weighing 742 lbs at 380.25 and 60 steers weighing 852 lbs at 337.75. Slaughter cows mostly low and average dressing sold 5.00-10.00 lower on a light offering.

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.
