Compared to last week, receipts of steer calves weighing 450-650 lbs and heifer calves weighing under 600 lbs were much lighter not having bigger bunches and overall numbers as last week as well as overall quality and sold with a weak to lower undertone with three pot loads of 920-940 steers trading with a higher undertone on limited comparisons from last week. Feeder heifers weighing 600-650 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Demand was moderate to good on a light to moderate offering. Stick out sales included the pot loads of yearling steers with 119 hd weighing 922 lbs at 364.85 and 57 hd weighing 940 lbs at 359.85. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
