Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer and heifer calves weighing 450-500 lbs were the only weakness as they traded mostly 5.00-10.00 lower, steer calves weighing 500-650 lbs traded 5.00-10.00 higher with 650-900 lbs selling with a firm to higher undertone on limited comparisons with two pot loads of 919 lb steers off the same consignment as two weeks ago trading 7.00 higher. Heifer calves weighing 500-600 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher, spots 15.00 higher with 600-800 lbs lightly tested but higher undertone. Demand was good on a heavy offering of feeder cattle. Overall the quality ran very deep on calves and yearlings even though the market over the last couple of weeks has eased off buyers were very active to own cattle. Regardless, there is still very good demand /interest in feeder cattle especially top quality feeders. Several stick-out sales included 88 hd of steers weighing 622 lbs at 476.00, with 37 hd weighing 621 lbs at 486.00; 120 hd steers weighing 889 lbs at 353.25; 116 hd 919 lbs at 352.50 with 61 heifers weighing 557 lbs at 460.00 and 94 heifers weighing 603 lbs at 428.75. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
