Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-700 lbs sold steady to firm, with spots 10.00 higher on the 450-500 lb steers calves and 5.00 higher on the 550-600 lb steers, pot load of 785 lb steers and pot load 835 lb steers were not well tested with limited offerings in that weight range last week but the pot load of 944 lb steers sold 5.00 lower than last week's loads of similar weight. Heifer calves weighing 400-450 lbs traded steady with 450-500 lb heifer calves steady to 10.00 lower, 500-600 lbs sold steady to firm and 600-650 lbs traded steady to 10.00 higher over 650 lbs were not well tested. Demand remains good with a moderate supply with very good demand on the calves going to grass. Several stick out sales included 83 hd of steers weighing 553 lbs at 527.00; 61 hd of steers weighing 784 lbs at 381.85 and 55 steers weighing 944 lbs at 341.00. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
