Compared to last week, a much lighter offering this week coming off the Easter Holiday weekend, with steer calves trading with a firm to higher undertone weighing 400-600 lbs, 600-650 lbs fully steady to firm and the pot loads of yearling steers over 800 lbs having the best test trading mostly 12.00-15.00 higher. Feeder heifers traded fully steady to firm, with 50 hd of heifers weighing 569 lbs selling 10.00 higher on the 550-600 lb heifers. Demand was good on an overall good quality offering. Several stick out sales included 61 steers weighing 643 lbs at 444.00, 62 steers weighing 800 lbs at 378.25, 68 steers weighing 820 lbs at 373.00 and 120 hd steers weighing 919 lbs at 350.25. Slaughter cows traded steady on a light offering.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
