Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves under 600 lbs and feeder steers over 600 lbs were all lightly tested on limited comparisons with last week but sold with a lower undertone, as weights of the pot loads and bigger groups of steers over 600 lbs didn't match up well with last week, a pot load of heifers weighing 635 lbs sold 10.00 lower than last weeks pot load of similar weight with over 650 lbs not well tested. Demand was moderate to good on a light to moderate supply. Markets have seen a lot of volatility over the last couple of weeks as CME Cattle Futures have come under pressure and again feeling it on Monday as Feeder Cattle contracts closed down 4.97 to 5.47 on the front months to start the week. Fed cattle market also lower on light trade last week mostly in the 240.00 range. Several stick out sales included the pot loads with 82 hd of steers weighing 643 lbs at 433.00, pot load steers 848 lbs at 344.75, 89 heifers weighing 570 lbs at 417.00, 85 heifers weighing 635 lbs at 405.00. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady with the bulk average and low dressing cows.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
