Compared to last week, steer calves under 600 lbs were lightly tested on a limited offering selling mostly in small groups and packages, 600-650 lbs sold steady with 650-750 lbs trading 7.00-15.00 higher, 750-800 lbs sold firm to 3.00 higher and over 800 lbs sold near steady on comparable weights. Heifer calves under 550 lbs on a light test sold with a firm undertone, with 550-600 lbs trading steady to firm and a light test of 6 weight heifers traded with a firm to higher undertone. Demand was good on a moderate supply with the bulk of the steers weighing over 600 lbs with a good quality offering. Several stick out sales included 55 steers weighing 636 lbs at 470.00, 72 steers weighing 705 lbs at 425.25, 68 steers 758 lbs at 384.75 and 83 heifers weighing 563 lbs at 454.50. Slaughter cows sold steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
