Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves weighing under 450 lbs were lightly on last week's much larger offering, with 450-600 lb steers selling 5.00-10.00 higher, spots 15.00 higher, 600-800 lb steers traded 3.00-8.00 higher and over 800 lbs sold steady. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold 10.00-15.00 higher, 500-600 lbs traded 5.00-10.00 higher with 600-650 lbs selling firm to 5.00 higher and 650-750 lb selling mostly 3.00-5.00 lower. Demand was very good on a moderate offering. The market stayed incredibly active on the feeders under 600 lbs and very active on heavier weights. Again this week quality was very attractive on calves and yearlings. Several stick out sales included 23 head 450 lb heifers at 406.00, 15 head 522 lb steers at 400.00, 47 head 608 lb steers at 345.00, 46 head 688 lb steers at 313.25, pot load of 934 lb steers at 263.35. CME Feeder Cattle contracts were sharply lower on all months with losses of 5.15-5.30 on the front three months along with concerns over the tariff turmoil had no effect on Monday's market. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
