Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, 450-500 lb steers sold mostly 3.00-10.00 higher, with 500-550 lbs selling fully steady to firm, 550-650 lbs sold 4.00-7.00 higher, spots 10.00 higher, with 650-700 lbs selling steady to firm, over 700 lbs sold mostly in pot load lots and traded with a firm to higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady to firm, with 500-600 lbs trading mostly steady to 5.00 higher, spots 10.00 higher on the 500-550 lbs, 600-650 lbs sold fully steady to firm and over 650 lbs were not well tested. Overall quality again this week was very good/attractive offering of steer and heifer calves as quality ran deep weighing 450-650 lbs all sold on and active market as did the pot loads and larger groups of yearlings weighing 700-850 lbs. Several stick out sales included 61 head 602 lb steers at 322.00, 127 head of 721 lb steers at 286.00, three pot loads of 811-848 lb steers selling from 260.00-266.50. Slaughter cows sold steady to 5.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
