Compared to last week, steer calves under 550 lbs on a light offering traded steady to firm, 550-600 lbs sold firm to 10.00 higher, with 650-700 lbs trading steady to firm, with 5 pot loads of yearling steers over 700 lbs all selling with a firm to higher undertone with no recent comparisons of pot loads. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs were lightly tested, with 500-550 lbs trading near steady, 550-600 lbs sold firm to 7.00 higher, 600-650 lbs traded 8.00-10.00 higher and a light test of 650-700 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Demand was good on a moderate supply. Demand was best on the pot loads with a pot load of top quality steers weighing 735 lbs at 285.75, two pot loads steers weighing 903-910 lbs 238.50-241.00, two pot loads weighing 951-985 lbs 232.00-235.00 and 74 hd of 584 lb heifers at 285 .50. Demand was also very good on the 600-650 lb heifers. Slaughter cows sold firm to 5.00 higher with the most advance on the high dressing cows.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
