Compared to last week, a much lighter offering this week with steer and heifer calves under 600 lbs lightly tested with few comparisons, 6 weight steers sold mostly 5.00-10.00 lower compared to last week's very active market, a pot load of good quality steers weighing 711 lbs sold 3.00 lower than last week's pot loads with a couple groups of 750-800 lb steers trading with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 600-700 lbs sold mostly 3.00-8.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good with a light to moderate supply. Overall quality and numbers were not as attractive as last week with one stick out sale a pot load of 711 lb steers selling at 294.75. Excessive heat and high humidity over the next several days are expected. Slaughter cows on a much larger offering sold steady to spots 3.00 higher on the high dressing cows.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
