Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-600 lbs. sold steady, with 600-650 lbs. trading 5.00-8.00 lower, two pot loads weighing 668 and 677 sold steady with yearling steers over 700 lbs. not well tested. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs. sold steady to firm, 500-550 lbs. got back what they lost last week trading 5.00-10.00 higher also quality was much better, 550-650 lbs. sold fully steady to firm. Demand was good on a moderate supply, the supply of calves overall was much lighter than last week with several stick out sales of yearlings including the two pot loads of steers weighing 668-677 lbs. at 304.00, pot load steers 872 lbs. at 253.75. Slaughter cows on a light test sold on a very active market trading 5.00-10.00, spots 12.00 higher, topping out at 160.00.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
