Compared to last week, light receipts this week coming off the Easter weekend in most cases were lightly tested but steer calves under 500 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone and 500-650 lb steers for the most part sold steady to firm. Feeder heifers weighing 400-550 lb sold steady to firm as well with a pot load of heifers weighing 669 lbs trading with a higher undertone than last week's light comparison. Demand was good for a light supply as buyers were active to purchase light calves for grass selling in small packages and groups, with many in the offering being new crop calves but overall quality was good on the calves. CME Cattle futures had a massive sell-off on Monday with Live Cattle contracts from April thru December down 4.92-6.10 and Feeder Cattle contracts from April thru November down 6.02 -7.50 seemed to have little effect on the feeder cattle market. Slaughter cows didn't reach last weeks highs but still sold on a very active market trading steady to 4.00 lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
