Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs and 600-650 lbs sold steady to firm, with 500-600 lbs trading firm to 8.00 higher, 650-700 lbs sold with a higher undertone, 700-800 lbs sold steady to firm, spots 3.00 higher and over 800 lbs sold with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher, spots 13.00 higher, 500-600 lbs sold fully steady to firm, with 600-650 lbs trading firm to 7.00 higher, 650-750 lbs sold steady to firm. Demand was good to very good with supply moderate. Demand remains very good with buyers still very aggressive to buy/own calves going to grass. Overall quality ran pretty deep on calves and yearlings with most calves long timed weaned with shots. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-10.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
