Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-600 lbs sold 10.00-20.00 higher, with instances 25.00 higher on the 4 weight steers and 550-600 lb steers, 600-750 lb steers sold 3.00-10.00 higher and over 750 lbs were not tested. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold 20.00-30.00 higher, with 500-600 lbs trading 10.00-20.00 higher and 600-650 lbs 8.00-10.00 higher, 650-700 lbs sold steady to firm. Despite some adverse weather conditions with freezing rain and slick roads Monday's market found some new highs to start the year as demand was very good on a nice offering of excellent quality long timed weaned calves with shots weighing 400-600 lbs and a good quality offering of 700-750 lb steers all sold on a very active market. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-7.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
