Compared to last week, steer calves under 600 lbs and heifer calves under 700 lbs sold mostly 10.00-20.00 lower, with 650-700 lb steers selling 6.00-10.00 lower compared to last week's light test, feeders over 700 lbs were not tested. Demand was light to moderate on a moderate supply. Offering included several consignments and strings of very good quality steers weighing 550-700 lbs and heifers weighing 550-650 lbs. CME cattle futures have dominated the tone of the cattle market with the bears roaring loud with a wash out that is occurring in the in the cattle futures. Feeder Cattle futures for January, March and April all closed 6.42-6.52 lower with Live Cattle closing with sharp losses on the front three months from 1.47 to 2.62 lower. Slaughter cows sold fully steady to 3.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
