Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-600 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher, with a light offering of 6 weight steers selling fully steady to firm and a part load of 883 lb steers traded steady within last week's range of pot load lots. Feeder heifers weighing 400-450 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher, spots 15.00 higher, with 450-500 lbs selling steady to firm on last week's active market, 5 weights traded steady on a light test and over 600 lbs were not tested. A light offering coming back from the Easter Holiday weekend but a good quality offering of steer and heifer calves with several large lots and groups of 400-600 lb heifers and steer calves selling on and active market with good demand. Slaughter cows sold steady on a light test.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
