Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers under 600 lbs sold steady to firm, with spots 5.00 higher on the 400-450 lb steers, 600-700 lb steers and heifers both sold 4.00-8.00 higher, with 700-750 lb steers trading with a firm to higher undertone. Slaughter cows on a large offering sold fully steady to firm. Demand was good on a light supply with a much lighter offering this week but overall a good quality offering sold on and active market especially the 600-750 lb steers. CME cattle futures closed with triple digit gains on both Live and Feeder cattle contracts with the front three months of Feeders closing 270-382 higher and the front three months of Live cattle closing 190-227 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
