Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week's much heavier receipts and very active market a much lighter offering of feeder steers weighing 400-550 lbs and 600-650 lbs sold 4.00-6.00 lower with steers weighing 550-600 lbs and 650-800 lbs selling steady. Feeder heifers weighing 400-600 lbs sold steady to firm, with over 600 lbs trading with a lower undertone. This week's offering sold with good demand but not reaching last week's highs on the steer calves as last week's receipts included numerous lots and strings of top quality calves in larger offerings. Overall prices on steer and heifer calves were still very active. Slaughter cows traded steady to firm.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
