Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week's auction which was mostly feeders weighing over 600 lbs, steer calves weighing under 550 lbs and heifers under 500 lbs all sold with a sharply higher undertone, steers calves weighing 550-700 lbs sold mostly 5.00-10.00 higher, with spots 12.00 higher on the 550-600 lb steers, 700-800 lbs sold steady over 800 lbs were not well tested with last weeks pot load lots. Feeder heifers weighing 500-600 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher, with 600-700 lbs trading 5.00-6.00 higher and over 700 lbs not well tested. There were many top quality steer and heifer calves in Monday's offering weighing 400-700 lbs with many groups, packages and strings all selling on a very active market. Overall demand was good to very good on a heavy supply of feeders. Slaughter cows sold firm to 2.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
