Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold 3.00-6.00 higher, with 500-600 lbs selling with a higher undertone with very few comparisons from last week and over 600 lbs were not tested. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm. Demand was good on a moderate offering with the best demand on a consignment of 300 head of top quality steers which included pot loads weighing from 585 to 732 lbs selling on a very active market along with a pot load weighing 927 lbs. Several small lots and packages of light steers and heifers under 600 lbs all sold with good demand. Feeder Cattle futures closed with triple digit gains from 182 to 187 on the front three months as Friday's COF report was very supportive as replacements came in at 94 percent the lowest October Placement figure since the series began in 1996.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
