Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400 lbs sold with a lower undertone on a light test, with 500-600 lb steers selling mostly steady with spots 3.00 lower on the 500-550 lb steers, over 600 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone. Feeder heifers on a light test weighing 400-550 lbs sold with a lower undertone and over 550 lbs traded steady to firm. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm, spots 3.00 higher on the high dressing cows. Demand was moderate to good with supply moderate. A good offering of 5 weight steer calves, with a pot load of 695 lb steers and two pot loads of 808 and 815 lb steers all sold with good demand. All commodities for the most part closed in the red on Monday with November corn closing 10 1/2 cents lower , November beans closed 14 1/2 cents lower with Live Cattle contracts closing 77 to 125 lower on the front three months and Feeder Cattle closing 120-127 lower on the front months.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
